Jesus is the Messiah[1] prophesied throughout the Hebrew Bible. In the fifty-third book of the prophet Isaiah (in the Hebrew and Christian bibles) this was prophesied of the Messiah:
“Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”[2]
Jesus is the Word made flesh[3] and His words are spirit and life. Jesus is the begotten son of God. Jesus is the son of God, and Jesus and the Father are one. Jesus is the second person of the trinity; God the Father, God the son, and God the Holy Spirit. His mother Mary, a virgin, was over -shadowed by the Holy Spirit. She conceived Jesus by the power of God and gave birth to Him. In Jesus, God was confined to humanity.
Jesus had a public ministry from the age of about 30 years old to 33 years old. In this time He preached the good news that the Kingdom of Heaven is near and attainable for all those who earnestly seek God. He taught many spiritual truths in parables and plainly to large groups of people and closely instructed His twelve disciples who accompanied Him for three years. He performed many signs and wonders for example feeding five thousand men with only two loaves and five fish, walking on water and rebuking a storm. Moved by compassion Jesus healed all who came to Him, delivered many people from demons and raised his friend Lazarus from the dead. During His time on earth Jesus’ activities were so numerous the bible states “And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain all the books that would be written. Amen.”[4] Jesus only did what he saw his Father, God, doing; He was in total obedience to His Father the whole time. Jesus and Father God are one.
When Jesus was about 33 years old He was crucified on a cross and was buried. The bible tells us cursed is he who hangs on a cross; Jesus took the sin of the world and the wages of sin which is death. After He died he descended into Hell. On the third day He rose from the dead and therefore conquered Hell and death. He then appeared to some of His disciples and followers, and then ascended into Heaven and is presently seated at the right hand of the Father (God) and makes continual intercession for us.
Jesus was and is the atoning sacrifice for the sin of the world. He is the sacrificial lamb. The Bible clearly states that all have fallen short of the glory of God and no one is without sin. This points to a need for a saviour for reconciliation with God. Jesus was and is the perfect saviour. Although a man, yet still God, He was without sin and completely fulfilled the Law and Prophets. It is by faith in the grace of God in the person of Jesus’ that anyone is saved and that alone – there is no other way to have a right relationship with God outside of Jesus. Jesus said “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father expect by me.”[5]
The bible tells us “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”[6]
Believers receive the Holy Spirit as a seal of their salvation, the Holy Spirit, which is the same spirit that raised Christ from the dead, lives inside of believers. Those who have the Holy Spirit are said to be Spirit lead and no longer controlled by a sinful nature (as unbelievers are). [7]The Holy Spirit, the third person of God, is also referred to as the counsellor, the comforter and teacher as He teaches us all things the Bible says. The fruit of the Holy Spirit living in someone is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.[8] The Holy Spirit in believers directly communes with God.
